Sandra St. Amour

Pottery

Sandra lives in Marlboro with her husband and rescue dog Jessie. She has a BFA from Maine College of Art and an MAT from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. During the school year she teaches visual art at the Birches School in Lincoln. Additionally, she teaches watercolor at the Umbrella Center for the Arts in Concord and at Post Road Art Center in Marlboro.

She is both a potter and a painter who loves texture, color and all things nature themed. She makes functional pottery that is adorned with images of animals and plants. Her watercolors are a loose and painterly form of realism. She says the somewhat unpredictable nature of watercolor pushes and pulls at her, and she enjoys saving blooms and splotches and using various tools to interrupt the flow of the paint. Her pottery too, is a place where perfection is not the goal. Instead, she keeps the mark of the maker visible in the carvings and uses loose brush strokes of underglaze to paint the surface of the clay.  She keeps the carving marks visible for aesthetic and textural feel and enjoys playing with the juxtaposition of raw clay against glassy glazes. Her work is both wheel thrown and hand-built using slab construction. In this day and age of mass production she encourages you to enjoy and use handmade objects for everyday.
