Liza Curtis
Pottery
Earth, fire, water, air - pure alchemy. Liza Curtis is a mother, maker and artist drawing on the elements of nature to create pieces which ignite a feeling of joy for their users. Liza makes large and small ceramic vessels which are inspired by gemstones and the ocean. Much of Liza's work fuses stained glass, 22k gold, resin and stoneware clay into a food safe piece which can be used for display, spices, rings, or whatever your heart desires.
Liza has lived in many different places around the United States and traveled quite extensively around Europe and the Middle East. In 1997 she graduated from Skidmore College with a BS in Art Education. After graduating Liza moved to Austin, TX and worked as a production potter and then onto Amelia Island, FL where she worked professionally as a mural artist, faux finisher and furniture painter. In 2004 Liza moved to Boston and worked as an art teacher for Boston Public Schools before having her first child and moving to Natick, MA in 2006.
Her process is simple: "I show up, get my hands dirty, and follow the inspiration as it ebbs and flows. Trusting the twists and turns, having faith in the outcome without expectation, and taking each day as it comes. Sometimes I know exactly what I am doing when I get into the studio, sometimes I have absolutely no idea. No matter what, I feel a spark of joy in my heart every time I open the kiln -- people can feel that -- and thats how I know its good work."
