Rose Downing

Seascape Decor

I’ve been a beachcomber my entire life; I can’t seem to walk the beach without coming home with something in my pocket.  I’ve been creative my entire life but my current artwork began as a desire to create something out of my very large collection of stones, shells and sea glass gathered over many years from places near and far.

I started with a couple of seascape wall murals and framed mirrors using grout but my focus changed in 2012, when I discovered resin.  Resin on glass soon became my primary medium and has been so ever since.  High gloss resin is an incredibly durable bonding material but has a much lighter feel than grout.  For me, one of the most appealing aspects of resin is that it makes everything look wet which enhances the natural beauty of shells, sea glass and especially stones. When an element of light; a candle or fairy lights, is added to one of my three -dimensional glass pieces it creates a beautiful glow that will softly illuminate a table or bookshelf.

I began making resin candle holders for family and friends; soon after I was selling my work as Beach House Rose at shows locally and on Cape Cod.  I’ve been showing my beach and nature inspired work at Five Crows for 5 years and feel fortunate to be part of the Five Crows family and the Natick arts community.  I have lived here since 1994 with my husband and 2 children and I very much enjoy my studio space in downtown Natick.  When I’m not there you might find me in a garden or on a Cape Cod beach usually accompanied by my black lab Henry.
