Tamu Gurevitz

I was born in New York City in 1960 but grew up close to Boston.  While my parents always approved of my artistic experiments, my first interest was in the hard sciences.  I attended Wellesley College ’82 majoring in Astronomy and Clark University ’90 for a degree in Computer Science.  Returning to art for its therapeutic benefits, I discovered I had a talent for this creative field and decided to become a professional artist.  I am a 2008 graduate of the Arts Institute of Boston at Lesley University Low Residency MFA Program in the Visual Arts.

My artistic vision has been strongly influenced by the works produced by my parents.  My father, a Holocaust survivor and psychoanalyst, painted and sculpted abstract pieces.  My mother is Haitian and paints large figures or fanciful birds in the colorful, naïve style of the Caribbean. I’ve adopted some of their intense emotional expressions, from brooding to lyrical, as well as the use of strong lines and bold colors.  Inspired by everything from classic Science Fiction to the wonders of natural forces I offer images that tell thoughtful stories and that share my delight in the fascinating details of the world around us.
