There's
something about transferring an image from a plate that has an altered
surface to a fine sheet of paper made from a far away land that somehow
excites my ambitions. Starting with a perfectly smooth plate and expressing
my inner thoughts by scribing or degrading the surface in an orderly fashion
creating an image is an emotional experience. I have found that the dry
point intaglio method of printmaking is one of the most direct ways of
drawing the same way that I would use a pencil or a pen.
Over the years I've experimented with various methods
such as etching, Solarplate, woodcut, monotype, pronto plate, gum arabic
transfers, etc. At the same time I have created plates with carborundum of
abstract landscapes that have a mysterious quality. I enjoy experimenting
with new methods and surfaces. Adding watercolor or printing on a special
handmade paper is frosting on the cake. I’ve created collages of my prints
and watercolors. They reminded me of doing difficult puzzles....
time consuming but very satisfying when completed.
