Cecelia Michaelis Artist Statement
I have been creating works
of art from fiber for many years. I create hats, pot
holders, pan handle covers, eye glass cases, flower and heart pins, wristlets,
ear bands, baby hats, baby sweaters, baby sleeping sacks, baby blankets and
garlands from recycled sweaters. I strive to make a useful beautiful item from
recycled materials rather than use new virgin materials.
I am particularly pleased when someone does not realize that the item is made
from recycled sweaters until she reads the hang tag. Each hat, ear band and
wristlet is embellished with a hand appliquéd flower. The pot holders are
decorated with an apple, pear, lemon, carrot or tomato motif. Eye glass cases
are embellished with a flower or novelty ribbons and yarns. Vintage buttons
adorn the eye glass cases for the closure. Baby items are made from cashmere
sweaters embellished with hearts or animals. The sweaters are washed in hot
soapy water, dried, pressed, cut into the desired shapes and then sewn.
In the past I was a weaver and once attended an estate sale where a very large
room was filled with yarn, fabric, weaving equipment and many looms. It was a
staggering sight to see how much equipment was collected by this person. When I
left that sale I realized that I wanted to create something from recycled
materials.
One of my goals is to keep the waste wool from entering the landfill. I donate
all of my wool scraps to art programs for children and adults. I am
really driven by the need to recycle materials in order to preserve our planet.
