My interest in " Nature Shapes" has really been part of me a long time, as my wife and I always loved the outdoors. I would spot things along a path that resembled something else, and they became a collection of "things".. usually of wood. My wife did some volunteer work for a partially blind, elderly woman, who made wonderful mobiles out of artistic wood shapes. My interest in her talent, let her to teach me her secrets for mobiles. That started a real search for "Natural Shapes"... on the ground. My development onto wood sculptures started, twelve years ago, walking the beaches of Cayman Broc, and spotting pieces, of giant "bamboo root" that caught my eye. They are infinitely different from any bamboo that grows above the ground, in twisted shapes. Since no bamboo grows on the Cayman Islands, it had to float in as "Beach Trash" from Jamaica or Cuba. I could easily see that with some shading of a mouth, an artistic fish was born... Then, mounted to the right piece of drift wood (from Maine) an interesting Fish Like Sculpture was born. This is where I am now:.. A long distance, creative, love affair, with Roots... Jack Finlay |
