GAIL WHITSITT-LYNCH

In 1973, I began concentrating on carving as my sculptural language. I had chosen carving because it  allowed me the most direct mental and physical means of conversing with natural materials. I explored wood solely for about five years,  and then added stone to accomodate ideas that suited the change in material.  Until several years ago, direct carving was my primary means of creating sculpture. I taught carving at the Rhode Island School of Design and through reisdencies; sharing carving with all ages and many skill levels.

I have always wished for a wider selection of people to have access to my own work, and, as a result, several years ago I began learning foundry techniques. I now select some carvings to transfer into bronze, pewter, and cast stone. These particular sculptures have been chosen because their subjects offer the widest spectrum of response to a multitude of diverse viewers.  My challenge is to create a fertile atmosphere for individual visual conversations for viewers through pieces that can be more readily acquired and then enjoyed over time.
